Stationary electromagnetic drives revisited under Noether's theorem

Abstract

We give a first-principles derivation, directly from Noether's theorem, of the total force produced by a stationary electromagnetic system in vacuum. The result rules out net thrust from a broad class of proposed drives. Prior experimental claims of thrust are shown to be consistent with measurement systematics.
