Abstract
We derive a density functional for quark matter with linear confinement interaction, applying the principle of saturation of color interactions. For the saturation parameter $μ$ the ansatz $μ=k_F$ is suggested, where for the Fermi momentum $k_F \propto n^{1/3}$ going to zero the Cornell potential is obtained and at finite quark densities $n$ an interaction energy density functional $\propto n^{2/3}$ results.

Summary
Physicists developed a new mathematical framework describing quarks under extreme pressure, where the strong nuclear force is screened at high densities—producing simpler behavior (energy scaling as density to the 2/3 power) rather than the usual Cornell potential.
- The researchers used a 'density functional' approach—a practical method for handling quantum many-body systems—adapted to quarks experiencing the strong force in ultra-dense conditions.
- By setting a saturation parameter proportional to the Fermi momentum, they showed the theory smoothly transitions from standard quark interactions at low density to a simpler screened regime at high density.
- This work may help predict the structure of neutron star cores and quark-gluon plasma, where quarks exist at densities too extreme for conventional particle simulations.
